A Landscape and Ecological Management Plan (LEMP) is a document required by UK councils as a planning condition, setting out how the landscaped areas and ecological features of a development will be established, managed and maintained over the long term. It covers planting and habitat creation, protected species measures, biodiversity enhancements such as bat and bird boxes, and a clear maintenance schedule with defined responsibilities — often spanning five to thirty years. Councils may secure similar requirements through an Ecological Management Plan or a Biodiversity Enhancement Plan; whatever the name, the purpose is the same. During the construction phase itself, ecological controls are usually handled within a Construction Environmental Management Plan (CEMP).
